Farming operations at IMPI include dryland cropping of cereals in favourable seasons and irigated annual crops. Wheat is grown under natural rainfall (250 mm / year) on 400 hectares and soybeans, wheat, barley, faba beans and durum are grown on 200 hectares of irrigated raised beds.

Irrigation is by gravity, with laser land forming ensuring a high degree of efficiency. Permanent raised beds are formed by sophisticated G.P.S. controlled equipment giving high accuracy and even bed width to maximize efficient use of cropping area.
Some areas have been set aside for organic production of grain and have been so certified by Biological Farmers of Australia.
Introduction of livestock and the production of certified seed under contract are planned future developments.

Farm production from the most recent cropping season (2001/2002):

Durum wheat 557 Tonnes.

Hard wheat 200 Tonnes.

Soy beans 155 Tonnes (including 50 T organic).
